Ode to my Mockingbird

Dante Gabriel Rossetti – Mary Nazarene

Right from the start you shot to my heart

And struck my core like you were mining for ore.

Aiming for the rungs I have left strung you plucked

And together we danced, rising above the floor.

From the south to the north we traversed the shore

Scouring ourselves and each other inside and out.

Intend to dislodge all that lays impure

Even if doing so meant we must confront our doubt.

In the light of the sun, shining from over the coast

And exposed to the world, oh how brightly we shown,

That we were each what the other beheld most,

A reflection of virtue and beauty, of how we’ve each grown.
